Greenland - the land of ice and snow


Let us study about Greenland . A land that is always covered with ice and snow. 

LOCATION AND AREA 
        Greenland is situated in frigid zone.  the arctic circle passes through the 
southern part of greenland  know as" tundra" the northern most tip of the world
is know as "cape mories". it is situated in greenland . greenland lies in the continents
of north america  it is the part of denmark (europe).
      it is the largest island in the world. the total aria of greenland is about 21.5 lakh square kilomiter . it is about 650km from the north pole .  
       the major part of greenland is parmanently coverd with snow and ice .during summer season big blocks of ice break off from the main mass of ice and float into the ocean , these called "icebergs"
      these icebergs are very dangerous for ships passing through  this regions .
The huge ship "titanic" sank into the sea after hitting one such ice berg.  
 CLAIMATE          
       
            it is extremely cold throughout the year. the winter season lasta from 9 to 10 months it remains dark till mid day . temperature  is always below freezing point due to heavy snowfall . in summer season the sun shine brightly eventhen the temperature
remains below freezing point .few month are total dark . but sun can be seen 
even at midnight . that is way it is called LAND OF THE MID NIGHT SUN.
VEGETATION  
   
                Nothing grows in the ice covered areas of greenland . vegetation is limited . only mosses ,lichens,grasses  and low shrubs grow in greenland ,during summer seasons few flowering plants and herbs can be seen only the tree of waist height are found here.

WILD LIFE
          
             ANIMALS which have thick furry coats and have a layer of fat under the skin can survive her common animal are musk ox Reindeer ,caribou,polarbear, wolf and seals . the wolf like dogs called "Huskies"  are found her which are used for pulling the sledge and for hunting few bards are also found her but large number of birds like duck,geese and waders came here for breeding 
OCCUPATION
                    
                 Earlier hunting and fishing was main occupation but now with the development, people work in oil companies and road construction  companies .
"HOLSTEINBORG" has got a shipyard where ships and boats are built and fish and fur exported.
TRANSPORT 
       
                    people of greenland use sledge pulled by huskies or kayaks they use sledge on snowy ground for transporting fur and for hunting animals . kayak is used for hunting sea animals with the changing time ships and air services are becoming main means of transport .

INDUSTRIES

    
              they use bows and harpoons to hunt animal . they use flash as food , boans and tendons and thread , skin is used to make small boats . 
   LIFE OF  THE PEOPLE 

             The total population of greenland is about 80,000.80% of these are Eskimo and others are mostly europeans . 
            Eeskimo are short have , have round face , slanting eyes and straight  black hair .Eskimo were nomads . they use large boat as" Umiaks and kayaks "for hunting  whales in open seas. they also used motor boats and motorised sleads. 
        GODTHAB is the capital of greenland and largest town .it is administrative center. 
HOLSTEINBORG  is the second largest town. it has shipbuilding yards .
